Eligibility for NTSE 2018 – 19 (State Level) for Maharashtra

  • Regular student studying in Std 10th in Government recognised school within the state of Maharashtra.

  • There is no condition of age, income or minimum marks.

  • Further there is no condtion of any entrance exam.

  • Condition for students under Open Distance Learning (ODL) schemes.

  1. Age must be below  18 years as on Ist July of the year of examination.
  2. Not employed
  3. Appearing for Std 10th examination for the first time.

How to apply for NTSE – Stage – I (State level)

  • Students have to make online application within time schedule, at the following websites, www.mscepune.in or https://nts.mscescholarshipexam.in
  • Information regarding Caste, Physically handicapped in the application form are to be filled after ensuring the details from the Caste certificate or Disability certificate.
  • Scanned copy of the form, with signature of the principal & passport size photograph of student, is required to be uploaded. Forms which are not fully filled  will not be accepted by the computer.

Exam Pattern:

NTSE 2018 – 19 is conducted in two stages, Stage-1 and Stage-2, the details of which are mentioned below.

NTSE Stage-1:

  • It is conducted at the state or union territory level.
  • Candidates can apply for the first stage from their respective states.
  • Results are announced separately for different states and union territories.
  • Candidates must score a minimum of 10 marks each in MAT, SAT and Language Paper to qualify for NTSE Stage-2.
  • About 4000 students qualify Stage-1 who then become eligible to participate in Stage-2.

NTSE Stage-2:

  • It is conducted at the national level.
  • Candidates who qualify Stage-1 can appear for Stage-2 exam.
  • Questions are not asked from the language section in this paper. There are 100 questions each from MAT as well as SAT.
  • Candidate must score well individually in SAT and MAT to qualify Stage-2.
  • Top 1000 candidates who qualify Stage-2 will be given the prestigious NTSE scholarships.

The pattern of written examination will be as follow:

Stage I : Examination at the State/UT will comprise of three parts.

Stage II : Examination at the State/UT will comprise of Two parts.

Note : Stage – II

  • No negative marking in both the paper 
  • Only candidates qualifying in both the papers separately will be considered for merit
  • Selection of awardee will be made on the basis of total marks scored in MAT & SAT based on merit.
  • There will not be  any paper on language test (Stage II)


About one thousand scholarships are awarded for different stages of education as follow:

  1. Scholarship of Rs 1250/- per month for Class-XI & XII
  2. Scholarship of Rs 2000/- per month for Undergraduates & Post- graduates
  3. Amount of scholarship for Ph.D. is fixed in accordance with the UGC norms


15% of scholarship is reserved for students belonging to the SC category, 7.5% of scholarship for students belonging to the ST category and 4% for Physically Challenged Group of Students

Application Procedure

NTSE 2018 – 19 

  • NCERT does not accept direct application for Stage-1.Students may contact the State/UT Liaison officer for procuring application form. However, application form can be downloaded from NCERT website. The completed application form should be signed by the Principal of the school. The candidate as well as the Principal of the school must adhere to the last date for submission of the Application Form. Different states may have different last dates for submission. Students are instructed to confirm from the liaison officer of their respective state, the address at which the completed forms are to be submitted. The State wise contacts of the liaison officers are available in the NCERT website www.ncert.nic.in. All queries related to application form should be directed to the State Liaison Officers (LOs).
  • For NTSE Stage-2, you need not fill any application form.
  • Candidates may fill up the Application Form, available on the NCERT website and submit along with a photocopy of the mark sheet of previous examination, within prescribed period.

Exam Fee

  • Each state or union territory has its own fee structure for NTSE Stage-1.
  • You are required to check with your state advertisement or circular to get details on the NTSE exam fee.
  • No fee is charged for NTSE Stage-2.

Note: SAT and MAT questions are asked in both NTSE Stage-1 and Stage-2. However, the language test in omitted in NTSE Stage-2. 

  • Mode of Exam: NTSE is a pen-and-paper based (offline) test.
  • Exam Duration: Candidates are given 3 hours to complete the all paper. (Stage-I)
  • Language for Question Paper: You have the option to take the paper in Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu or Urdu. (Stage-I)
  • Question Type: The questions are of MCQ type with 4 alternatives per question.
  • Marking Scheme: Candidates will be awarded +1 for a correct response. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
  • Qualifying Marks: Qualifying marks for candidates of General category is 40% in each paper. For SC, ST and physically handicapped 32% in each paper.
